i often wonder, not just at the derivation of symbols and their usage and meaning, but of how they were originally conceived of. "fleur-de-lis" literally means lily flower, and has for thousands of years (think mesopotamia) stood as a symbol of royalty and nobility. the lily would be impossible to miss, but what possessed someone to denote it as a symbol of strength and royalty?
